What is actually going on
More than half the people who visit your website are on a phone, and for a local service business it is usually closer to three quarters. They are looking you up in a parking lot, or on the couch at nine at night after the water heater started leaking. If your site was built before that was true, it was designed for a desktop screen and squeezed down to fit.
What that looks like in practice: headlines that run off the right edge, a phone number too small to tap without zooming, a menu button that does nothing, a form where the keyboard covers the Send button. The site is not broken exactly. It just quietly turns away everyone who is not sitting at a desk.
What this costs you
If a customer has to pinch and zoom to find your phone number, they will not bother. They go back to the search results and call the next company, and you never find out it happened. Google also checks the phone version of your site when it decides where to rank you, so a site that is awkward on mobile gets pushed down for everyone.
How to tell if this is you
- You have to turn your phone sideways to read your own website.
- Text or photos run off the edge of the screen and you have to scroll sideways.
- The menu button does not open, or opens something that covers the whole page.
- Your phone number is text you cannot tap to call.
