What is actually going on
A slow website is the easiest problem to miss, because it is never slow for you. Your phone has already saved a copy of your own site, so it snaps open the second you tap it. The customer standing in their driveway with one bar of signal gets a very different experience: a white screen, then a logo, then nothing for another five seconds.
Most slow sites got that way honestly. Someone uploaded photos straight off a phone camera, and each one is six or eight megabytes. A booking widget got added, then a chat bubble, then a review badge, and each of those loads its own pile of code before anything on your page can show up. None of it was a bad decision on its own. Together they add up to a site that takes nine seconds to do what it should do in two.
